At Advanced Dermatology of the Midlands, we are heavily involved in developing and bringing to practice new medical and surgical therapies to improve the care of patients with skin disorders. Because it is so common and can cause so much trouble for our patients, we have a special focus on acne.
We would like to share with you three new acne treatment updates, which are innovative medications for acne that have come to the market recently. Our dermatologists believe that all three of these acne treatments will each have an important role in improving the management and control of acne for select patients.
Acne Treatment Updates
Two of these represent novel medications within their drug class. Another medication is a heavy overhaul/re-formulation of an existing medication that has been used for years in acne. One of the medicines is taken by mouth, and two are applied to the skin (topical).
Aklief (trifarotene cream)
The first and perhaps most important medication is known as Aklief (trifarotene cream). Aklief is a new addition to the class of medicines known as the retinoids. These are derivatives of vitamin A. It has been over two decades since a new medication in this class has come to market for the treatment of acne. This medication has been tested in and approved for patients down to 9 years of age. Uniquely, Aklief has also been tested for application to the face and torso and showed good results for both target areas. This medication is the first and only topical retinoid medication to target a very specific receptor in the skin. This makes it especially well-suited for use in the acne.
Amzeeq (minocycline foam)
Amzeeq (minocycline foam) is an applied antibiotic foam that has recently gained FDA-approval for acne. This antibiotic has been used in a pill version for nearly half a century. The best dermatologists know this pill as one of the most common antibiotics prescribed for acne. This is the first applied (topical) version of this medication to ever be successfully developed. Like Aklief, this medication is approved for patients age 9 and older.
Seysara (sarecycline tablets)
Seysara (sarecycline tablets) is the final noteworthy medication that has recently been added to our armamentarium to treat acne. This is a pill antibiotic that is approved (also for age 9 and older) to treat acne. Like the Amzeeq foam, Seysara is in the antibiotic class known as tetracyclines. This class of medications has been used to treat acne for decades. Seysara is particularly special because it has very specific weight-based dosing that we can utilize for our patients. This will be helpful when tailoring treatment plans with this medication.
