It’s easy this time of year to focus on all the amazing features of fall such as the leaves changing color, the cooler weather, and the sights and sounds of Halloween including trick-or-treaters. Yet it’s also important not to lose sight of good care for your skin and the skin of your family members. A handful of things can occur around this time of year as we approach the Halloween holiday that can contribute to some skin issues. The dermatologists at Advanced Dermatology of the Midlands want to share some tips to keep your skin happy and beautiful through this season.
Omaha Dermatologist to Avoid Scary Skin Halloween Tips
At the time of Halloween autumn is generally in full swing, and with the change in the climate our skin can change. Most notably, humidity drops. With this lowering of humidity levels, our skin tends to become a drier. This can occur due to us switching on our furnaces as the temperatures drop overnight. Furnace heated air tends to be dryer and it can dry out our skin. Spending time outdoors in the dryer weather, even just walking around trick-or-treating on Halloween night, can further expose us to these elements drying us out even more.
Moisture for Scary Skin
For this reason, using moisturizers and other measures to help with dry and sensitive skin is very important to keep away the itchy goblins. We also recommend limiting the amount of time that you are in the shower. Watch the water temperature in the shower. Very hot water may further dry out and damage our skin. Regular use of a moisturizer once to twice daily can also help. Keep in mind that the thicker the moisturizer, the better it works. Creams are generally better than lotions. The preferred brands that we recommend to our patients include:
- CeraVe
- Cetaphil
- Vanicream
Staying Warm
Remember that when you bundle up yourself or your family to protect against the elements, also take steps to protect your skin during this season of change. And just by bundling up you can reduce how the harsh elements including windburn and the sunlight can harm your skin when you are outdoors.
Halloween Costumes
Halloween costumes can also contribute to skin issues at times. As far as masks go, for those who are latex allergic or latex sensitive be weary of masks that may contain questionable materials—these may trigger rash or other more severe reactions. As far as costume makeup goes, we have a few recommendations. Consider initially trying to apply makeup in a less conspicuous location such as the upper inner arm for a few days in a row and then observing the area to make sure that your skin does not have any sensitivities to it. Also, when wearing it, limit the length of time you wear the makeup as much as possible by washing it off as soon as you can. For removal of makeup, we prefer CeraVe or Cetaphil foaming cleansers.
Remember
Remember, during this season of change the elements and the effect they have on our skin changes. To maintain the health and beauty of skin it is important to shift your care plan for your skin this time of year to keep things in as good a shape as possible.
